Timbre Winery: The Resonance of Place and Precision
In music, timbre refers to the distinct color and quality of a sound. In the glass, it is the unmistakable resonance of a vineyard, captured with a clarity that favors balance over weight and nuance over noise. Timbre Winery is that masterclass in coastal California precision.
The Winemaker’s Narrative
The story of Timbre is the evolution of Josh Klapper from an award-winning sommelier to one of the Central Coast’s most thoughtful winemakers. His tenure at Sona in Los Angeles earned him Wine Spectator’s Grand Award for a list that celebrated both classics and emerging talent. Eventually, the pull of the cellar won. He moved north to learn the craft at the source, working multiple harvests at Au Bon Climat and Qupé under icons Jim Clendenen and Bob Lindquist.
Their devotion to moderate ripeness and vertical site expression shaped his philosophy. Timbre grew from those lessons, focusing on cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with select Rhône and Bordeaux varieties layered in. Today, Timbre operates from a 6,500-square-foot facility in San Luis Obispo, known as “The Cap,” a strategic hub for exploring the region’s diverse geology and shifting microclimates.
“Wines should feel composed, not forced. Let the site sing; the rest is accompaniment.”
The Personal Integrity of Kosher
The kosher program at Timbre began as a family conversation in 2011. Encouraged by his father, Josh produced small kosher lots using the same vineyards and the same intent as the rest of his range. This wasn’t a separate tier; it became a defining part of the winery’s identity.
For Klapper, these wines create a personal link to his family’s Shabbat table in New York. This commitment has drawn notice from leading publications including The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, with his Riverbench Pinot Noir recently receiving a staggering 94 points from Antonio Galloni at Vinous. These are elite California wines that happen to be kosher.

Central Coast Heritage: The Vineyards
Josh partners with a collection of cool-climate sites chosen for quality, clarity, and energy. These vineyards speak clearly and evolve gracefully:
- Riverbench Vineyard (Santa Maria): A focused expression of marine soils and old seabed, delivering vibrant red fruit and savory earth tones.
- Mesa Verde Vineyard (Santa Ynez): Sourced for Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, and Syrah. Sandy loam soils shape wines with vertical energy and aromatic vibrancy.
- Greengate Vineyard (San Luis Obispo): At the heart of the coastal fog influence, delivering finely etched Pinot Noir and Chardonnay shaped by ocean air.
- Tommy Town Vineyard (Happy Canyon): Architectural Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec chosen for structural depth and poise.
- Morro View (Edna Valley): Captured Grenache that reflects the specific energy of the Edna Valley landscape.
- Donati Home Ranch (Edna Valley): Syrah parcels rounding out the palette with coastal freshness and refined tannins.
- Bien Nacido & Presqu’ile (Santa Maria Valley): High-pedigree cool-climate sites that anchor Josh’s sourcing strategy.
Technical Tasting Notes

The Red Blend Series
2023 Rare Groove Red Blend (Kosher)
The 2023 Rare Groove Red Blend reflects a generous vintage that delivered both ripeness and definition. A dark-fruited Central Coast red defined by line and length rather than sheer power, it blends blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum with subtle cocoa and pencil shavings. A high percentage of Cabernet brings an architectural frame and fine-grained tannins. Medium-plus body with a polished, clean finish.
Serving: 60–62°F. Hold 3–6 years for added complexity.

Single-Vineyard Expression
2023 “The Rhythm” Pinot Noir, Riverbench Vineyard (Kosher)
A pure translation of cool, marine soils. Leads with vibrant red cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate, supported by rose petals and gentle earth tones that recall the old seabed. Supple and precise on the palate, with savory notes of fennel seed and forest floor emerging with air. Long, cool, and focused finish.
Serving: 58–60°F. Optimal drinking window: 2026–2031.

Proprietary White Blend
2025 “Rare Groove #3” Proprietary White Blend (Kosher)
Sourced from the Mesa Verde Tunnel vineyard, this Chardonnay-majority core with Sauvignon Blanc is barrel-fermented in neutral vessels to build texture without overt oak influence. Expect vibrant green apple, ripe pear, and winter citrus layered with hints of pineapple and a subtle, non-oak sweetness. The palate is vibrant and finely textured.
Serving: 48–52°F. Drink now for freshness or cellar through 2029.

For Burgundy-leaning palates, these wines offer detail and nuance; for California drinkers, they provide generous fruit held in check by natural freshness. Each bottle is a reminder that the most compelling notes in California wine are often the most quiet.
